Bangkok’s rooftop view by night gives you a different perspective of this capital from what it looks on the ground during the day. The following rooftop bars show you different corners of Bangkok at night and also serve you gourmet food and sensational drinks.

Swing Bar by Ching Cha

Overall

Swing Bar by Ching Cha is on the rooftop of a trendy hostel on Siri Phong Rd., facing Lan Khon Meaung at the front of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Office. It’s a bit of an exercise to hike up the stairs at the back of the building to the sixth floor; but it’s worth the effort. Most people come here for beer but the bar’s signature cocktails are also great. Phra Nakhon Swing, a combination of vodka and water melon is so perfect that it tastes really refreshing. Ching Cha Monster, fresh herbs play a big part in this creative cocktail, giving it an exotic Thai taste.

Sam chan narok is a popular dish; the pork belly is fried until crispy then mixed with fresh bird’s eye chili and served with a spicy dip called ‘nam prik narok’. It sure is very spicy and scrumptious.

The bar has two sections for tables; balcony tables overlooking Sao Ching Cha (the Giant Swing) and tables for group patrons. Advanced booking is recommended to guarantee the best table.

342 Bar

Overall

342 Bar is on the rooftop of Baan Wanglang Hotel. The house number of which is taken as its name. You can see the serene view of the bend of the Chao Phraya River and the Grand Palace, spectacularly lit up after sunset. Wat Arun too, looks very impressive especially Phra Prang –pagoda - glowing like gold at night. The sputtering sound of passing motor boats can be heard in the background. 342 Bar really reflects the night life in the Wanglang area.

The menu list is extensive and covers both Thai and western cuisines. Recommended dishes are Grilled Australian Wagyu Beef with Spicy Sauce; it is delicious. For drinks, the house’s signature cocktail, Clone Din, is specially prepared with tequila home-distilled from beetroots resulting in a different color and slightly sweet with peanut and corn flavors. Cloudy Tom Yum is very aromatic from the tom yum herbs, foamy egg white giving it a smooth texture. Harvest Moon is a perfect combination of whisky and bourbon; the accompanying dates make the cocktail taste even nicer.

Dumbo

Dumbo in Saphan Khwai takes its name and character from a small, hip neighborhood in New York between Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge. Adding to the Manhattan flair is Dumbo’s evening atmosphere with the sight and sound of the sky train passing by while the turntable entertains patrons with jazz music. Live jazz band performs regularly on Friday and Saturday nights.

All signature cocktails here are inspired by jazz music, Mahavishnu, named after a famous jazz band, has a whisky and hot ginger-piece base. Dumbo (triple sec, bourbon, mint and brown sugar) is the strongest drink on the menu. It is slightly sweet with fresh minty aroma. Spanish Key has champagne and triple sec as main ingredients and goes down easier than Mahavishnu and Dumbo. The dishes here are cooked in a homemade style. Recommended dish is Fire Starter. It is the familiar spaghetti with Bolognese sauce that has been simmered with herbs for about two hours but it is presented in a flambé style. An amount of vodka is poured on an empty plate then put alight before pouring the spaghetti that has been mixed with the sauce onto the plate. The vodka does enhance the flavor immensely.
