On Tanao Road in Bangkok (near Khok Wua intersection) stands a Thai-colonial style, wooden house. Surrounded by tall, shady trees, this elegant building was for long overlooked by passers-by, as it fell into disrepair and its beauty faded.
The century-old teak house was known as Baan Tanao and belongs to the Bunyaratwets, a clan that produced a Thai herbal inhalant called Sukhontha Osot (also known as the “Horse Brand”) which had been famous since the reign of Rama IV. The house itself was built in 1922, during the reign of King Rama VI.
Over time, as modern medicine gained popularity, Thai traditional medicine started to fade. As a result, the house and its pharmacy were shut down for 40 years, until Mr. Dolchai Bunyaratwet, a designer and brand creator and the fifth-generation heir of the family, inherited it. He restored the old house, adding new features to it while keeping the charm of the original style as much as possible. The house opened its doors to welcome customers again in January 2020, under the name "Baan Ya Hom Zantiis".
Zantiis means a sense of peace and serenity and it is also the name of Dolchai's incense brand. The reopening of this old house with new looks, therefore, aims to convey a sense of relaxation, freedom, simplicity and easygoingness, which are all necessary for creating peace in the body and the mind. The name also symbolises a continuation of the history of Thai traditional medicine: Thai herbal wisdom that is a family heirloom passed down over five kings’ reigns.
The ground floor of the house has been refurbished into a cafe and captures the atmosphere of the old house with a contemporary touch. From the moment you set foot into the house, you will be immersed in relaxing fragrances. The cafe offers coffee, other beverages and Thai desserts such as Tako, sticky rice, mango, lychee, golden threads, banana leaf, etc. The second floor provides traditional Thai massage, aromatic massage, foot massage, body scrub, and herbal compress massage.
