Dwarfed by skyscrapers that compete for height, there stands a small, vintage coffee house by a pond, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Mango.
Samantao Heritage Coffee is a new establishment at Nai Lert Park Heritage Home in Ploenchit-Chidlom area, the major business district of Bangkok.
This intimate coffee house tells the story of its first owner “Nai Lert Sresthaputra” or Phraya Bhakdinorasresth, a prominent figure in Thai history. The late Nai Lert was a successful businessman who left behind many legacies, such as founding Thailand’s first bus service, called ‘Rot May Khao or “white bus”. He also owned a department store and a well-known five-star hotel. Thrilling.
The old Park Nai Lert Hotel is now a restaurant, catering business and Samantao Heritage Coffee shop, with an ambience of the ‘good old times’ and operating under the name Nai Lert Park Heritage Home.
The name “Samantao” is taken from the name of Nai Lert’s boat that he used more than one hundred years ago, when Bangkok’s canals were the main channels for commuting around the city. The Samantao boat was the sports car of its day.
This coffee house is the brainchild of Naphaporn Bodiratnangkura, Park Nai Lert’s fourth generation heir, who realised that there was an unused raft on the pond in the Nai Lert Park Heritage Home. In the past, this raft was used for receiving guests who arrived by boat since, at one time, the pond was connected to San Saeb Canal. The vintage coffee house is intended to provide visitors with the impressive experience of coffee shops of the past - the coffee shop that can thrive among nature instead of in a shopping center. Moreover, it serves as a reminder of the former tie between Thai people and the city’s waterways.
As a result, Samantao Heritage Coffee is set in a waterside Thai house of striking architectural style, among the fresh foliage of a garden. It serves various types of Thai traditional coffee, tea and snacks, such as old-style coffee, chicory drink, Thai tea, cool milk, toast, boiled eggs and bread and toast with sweet pandan spread. The items on the menu may sound simple but they are prepared with selected, high quality coffee beans from the north, while sweet dishes are all prepared following Park Nai Lert’s very own homemade recipes.
This vintage coffee house is surely a haven in the middle of a bustling city. Drop in for a moment of physical and mental relaxation, and at the same time to enjoy delicious refreshments and desserts of the good old days.
