This month’s special Royal Orchid Holidays golf review takes you to two Alpine golf courses in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Alpine Golf Club

If you’ve had the privilege to play at the private Alpine Golf Club just 30 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, you will know the meaning of paradise golfing.

Not to be confused with “easy”, paradise here is the dream to return to beat the course handicap at this lush 18-hole championship golf course. From the tee and the fairways, to the roughs and the greens, members and their guests can easily get lost in the scenery and beauty of the immaculately-maintained property – there is something special to appreciate at every shot.

Featuring contoured greens and sloping fringes, nearly all the holes are hilly on the left of the fairway, with a lake or a stream on the right and bunkers dotted along the way. For newcomers, before starting the round, ROH highly recommends a preview of their entertaining yet lucid advice of each hole on their website. You just might enjoy reading about them almost as much as playing the holes.

Aside from the regular golfing at this private club, members have abundant opportunities to challenge their skills against other members through Alpine Golf Club’s golf challenges and tournaments abroad, playing with members of sister clubs in other countries throughout the year. If you’re looking for this kind of challenge, join their membership programme and expand your golf horizon.

Alpine Golf Resort

Up in the north of Thailand, the Alpine Golf Resort in Chiang Mai is a great option for golfers who prefer to stay and play in higher elevation, and enjoy on-site leisure activities in between.

Set in a valley 1,500 metres above sea level, Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai is surrounded by scenic views of the mountains. The courses here may have longer yardage combined than its sister course in Bangkok (by about 500 yards), but it has more forgiving tee shots and second shots with their wider fairways.  As for the greens and terrains, ROH recommends relying on the experience of the caddies for your first round. Otherwise, you may have a few more putts than you should as the terrain and slopes of the greens aren’t really what you think you’re seeing.

A favourite and most challenging hole is the paddy field Par 3 Hole B7, with tee-off at higher elevation than the small green which has a steep fringe sloping to the right and a bunker in front and curved toward to the left. If your ball flies right off the green, it will land on either the edge of the swampy grass or the steep slope, which means you’ll be chipping blind onto the green. On the other hand, if your ball lands in the sand, you’re sure to be nervous for your second shot trying to avoid an overshoot that lands in the steep slope.

The 18-hole A-B courses takes four hours to complete, starting from sunrise and finishing well before noon, allowing ample time to return to the Alpine Golf Resort hotel in time to freshen up for lunch at the indoor clubhouse dining room.  A variety of lunch and dinner menus are on offer including unique local dishes as well as a selection of international flavours.

Leisurely afternoons can be enjoyed at the swimming pool, driving range to practice golf swings, putting green, or at the billiards room for a game of snooker or billiards. For family members, friends, or colleagues who are not golfers, Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai is a destination of its own with non-golfing activities including bicycling around the property or rejuvenating with a massage.

Whether playing in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Alpine Golf Club and Alpine Golf Resort offer a truly enjoyable, and challenging, golf experience.

A golf journey with Royal Orchid Holidays at Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai

With Royal Orchid Holidays, golfers and non-golfing family members can enjoy quality time together, either with our typical holiday plan or a bespoke itinerary customized to each party. With hectic work schedules and commitments, a holiday with Royal Orchid Holidays can set you on your way to a memorable getaway.

Day 1 – Take a morning flight on THAI to Chiang Mai and arrive at Alpine Golf Resort for a relaxing rest of the day, practicing your golf swings at the 250-yard-long Driving Range on grass turf. You can also schedule a one-hour foot, shoulder, or body massage, followed by refreshing swim just 20 steps from the massage facility.

Day 2 – Enjoy an early morning full breakfast at the clubhouse and ready yourself for an exciting 18-hole round of golf on any two 9-hole courses. Spend the afternoon bicycling around the property or rent a golf cart to preview the next day’s golf course. Book a van for a city excursion and enjoy a little night life. For golfers who want an extended play, a 27-hole round on Course A-B-C can be achieved with a tee-off between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Day 3 – Watch the sun rise from the clubhouse while enjoying breakfast and preparing for a round on a different 9-hole golf course. If you’ve played Course A-B on the first day, then you should now try either Course A-C, or Course B-C.  Course C is the newest 9-hole course and promises to be even more fun as well as challenging.

Royal Orchid Holidays Golf can accommodate individuals, family group, or golf groups for leisure or competition.  Let Royal Orchid Holidays plan your memorable golf trip.
