Kwan Phayao (Phayao Lake) is a must-visit destination for lovers who come to Phayao province. It is the biggest fresh- water lake in the northern region.
This vast lake in the middle of Phayao town was a catchment for water from nearby mountains and was used for irrigation and fish farming until 1939, when the Department of Fisheries built a sluice gate to keep more water in the lake, leading to the inundation of nearby communities and temples.
Wat Tilok Aram was one of the temples affected. It was rediscovered by a local fisherman in 1983, and subsequently became a local attraction. Lovers who come to Kwan Phayao usually take a boat out onto the lake to visit the temple.
Best time to take a rowboat trip: Avoid hot sunny period by going in the morning or late afternoon (not later than 5.00 pm).
Fee for a rowboat: 30 Baht per person, or 150 baht to rent a whole boat (seats 5 passengers).
